Matthew Rhys ha vinto due Emmy nella stessa sera. Il primo come protagonista comedy per Widow's Bay, la serie Apple TV in cui interpreta il sindaco di un'isola del New England che tutti considerano maledetta tranne lui. Il secondo come protagonista di una serie limitata, per The Beast in Me su Netflix. In 78 anni di Emmy non era mai successo che un attore vincesse due categorie da protagonista con due serie diverse nella stessa cerimonia. Messo insieme al premio del 2018 per The Americans, Rhys è anche il primo uomo ad aver vinto nelle tre categorie principali, drama, comedy e serie limitata. Ai giornalisti, dopo, ha detto di essere «un po' stordito» e ha definito il discorso per The Beast in Me, che non aveva preparato, «un vomito di parole». Sul palco aveva ringraziato il Galles, «piccola ma potente nazione».
Widow's Bay ha vinto 14 premi su 19 candidature. Miglior serie comedy, sceneggiatura alla creatrice Katie Dippold, regia a Hiro Murai, i due non protagonisti a Kate O'Flynn e Stephen Root. È uscita ad aprile e in cinque mesi ha battuto The Bear, Abbott Elementary e Shrinking, che sono tornate a casa senza niente.
Jean Smart ha vinto per la quinta volta con Hacks, una per ogni stagione della serie, che quest'anno si è conclusa. Non era mai successo a un'attrice. È il suo ottavo Emmy, lo stesso numero raggiunto nella stessa sera da Allison Janney per The Diplomat: le due ora sono in cima alla classifica di sempre insieme a Julia Louis-Dreyfus e Cloris Leachman. Rhea Seehorn, che aveva collezionato candidature a vuoto con Better Call Saul, ha vinto il suo primo, per Pluribus.
The Pitt era la serie con più candidature, 25, e ha portato a casa il premio più importante, miglior drama, oltre a quello per Noah Wyle, protagonista per il secondo anno consecutivo, cosa che non accadeva dai tempi di Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad. «Sono cresciuto a Los Angeles, sono un figlio di Hollywood», ha detto Wyle. «Questo è l'unico club in cui ho sempre voluto entrare».
Stephen Colbert ha vinto per il miglior varietà con l'ultima stagione del Late Show, cancellato dalla CBS tra le polemiche, e ha usato il discorso per fare pubblicità alle oltre duecento persone che ci hanno lavorato in dieci anni: «Assumeteli, vi renderanno la vita più facile». Vince Gilligan, premiato per la sceneggiatura di Pluribus, ha detto che la sua serie è ambientata in un mondo in cui tutti vanno d'accordo, «una cosa da fantascienza», e ha invitato a non dare retta a chi pensa che il rispetto sia roba da ingenui. Più di così la politica non è entrata: rispetto agli ultimi anni è stata una cerimonia che ha parlato soprattutto di televisione.
