Historical notice
L'entrée des caves peintes présente une arcade en tiers point de section rectangulaire. Ces caves sont mentionnées dans le Pantagruel de Rabelais. La cave peinte a été primitivement une carrière, creusée du 12e au 15e siècle par les entrepreneurs en maçonnerie chargés de la construction du château de Chinon et des remparts de la ville. Le lieu fut ensuite utilisé comme cellier à vin dès la fin du 15e siècle. La dénomination de "caves peintes" vient des fresques qui ornaient autrefois les murs et qui, d'après Rabelais, représentaient des danses bacchiques. Il n'en reste plus trace aujourd'hui.
